Oakland Raiders: 5 Free Agents Who Could Be Targeted By Other Teams
David Wilson – Feb 3, 2012We have written plenty about the free agents that we would like the Oakland Raiders to target over the last few days, but free agency is a two way business.
It was a two way street that the Raiders were on the wrong side of last year, losing Nnamdi Asomugha, Robert Gallery, Zach Miller, and Thomas Howard. They picked up only Kevin Boss.
Whilst that may result in some compensatory draft picks, needless to say that if those players had still been on the team, then Oakland would have made the playoffs this year. Asomugha alone might have made that difference.
So who is a free agent this year?
For those who are, there is a possibility they won't be coming back.
Jason Campbell- QB: Campbell was entrenched as the Raiders starter going forward before going down with a broken clavicle against the Cleveland Browns. That may well be the last down he has played as an Oakland Raider. Campbell has the talent to be a starter in this league, he has shown that. The new coaching staff have announced that Carson Palmer will be their guy, which leaves no room for Campbell. He deserves to start somewhere, and somewhere won't be in Oakland.
Tyvon Branch - S: Branch is as good a player as the Raiders have on defense, and had a great year in 2011 leading the team in tackles once again. He certainly could be a target for other teams, but a player that Oakland will look to lock up into a big contract. He deserves it by the way he has performed. It will be Branch's decision whether he wants to sign or not, but if he doesn't, Oakland has the option to franchise him. Though he may be the targeted, I think he stays in Oakland, at least for this year.
Michael Bush - RB: Bush did sterling work replacing Darren McFadden last year, and showed the value in having two capable running backs on every team. Don't think his performances went unnoticed by other coaches. Although he faded down the stretch, he excelled early on, and uses all his 245lbs to hammer through defenses. Bush is amongst a strong group of free agent running backs this year that includes Arian Foster, Matt Forte, Ray Rice, and Marshawn Lynch. Whilst Bush isn't quite in that group, he will be a good second tier prospect and is bound to draw interest. Oakland will want to keep him, and for that reason he is the most likely recipient of the franchise tag this year.
John Condo - LS: Condo is generally accepted as the best long snapper in the AFC, hence his appearance in the pro Bowl every year. It's easy to forget about a guy who just snaps the ball on field goals and extra points, but Condo is a big contributor on special teams. Every field goal that Janikowski kicks, every punt that Lechler makes, has to be delivered accurately. Condo is that guy. Al Davis used to pay his special team guys well, if Reggie McKenzie doesn't feel the same way, Condo might not return.
Samson Satele - C: Satele has quietly had a good last couple of years in Oakland, and when he has been fit, has performed very well. He carried leg and rib injuries this year which limited his effectiveness. The Raiders may want to keep him, but retain the option of moving Stefan Wisniewski over to center, or targeting another guy altogether. Houston's Chris Myers, or Green Bay's Scott Wells are also out of contract. If Oakland wants to keep Satele, they should be able to and he probably fits better into the new zone blocking scheme than he does in the old power one.
Other Raiders who are currently out of contract are Trevor Scott, Chaz Schilens, Jarvis Moss, Rock Cartwright, Khalif Barnes, Kyle Boller, Quentin Groves, Stephon Heyer, and Darryl Blackstock.
Oakland may look to bring back Scott, Schilens, Moss, and Cartwright, but Khalif Barnes has probably seen his last day as a Raider. He was a sub-par right tackle this year, and Josef Barksdale is waiting in the wings to take his job.
I don't think Kyle Boller needs discussion...
Oakland is in a better situation than many with it's free agents, with just a few contracts to sort out prior to the March free for all.
