2012 Oakland Raiders: 11 Raider Players You Should Know About
Terrell White – Mar 21, 2012
Holla At Me Raider Nation!
Well, the NFL Draft is almost at hand! Very soon we will be welcoming new members to RAIDER NATION!! However, the law firm of McKenzie & Allen(come on now... don't their names together sound like a law firm?) have already been busy adding to (and subtracting from) the Raiders roster.
Hey! I did warn you in my last article that this was going to be a busy month for our Raiders.
I've been looking into some of our additions, as well as some of the first year players the Raiders have decided to keep with the team; This is because I'm a firm believer in the fact that your team is only as strong as your weakest link. I personally don't just like to know who's going to be on the starting roster; I like to know who the "back-up" players are, as well as who's on the practice squad.
With that in mind let's take a quick look at some new members, as well as some of the young developmental talent of our beloved Oakland Raiders, that you may have forgotten about.
Mason Brodine-Defensive End 6'7 225lbs. Signed to the Practice Squad. Mason spent his college career playing for UNK (University of Nebraska-Kearney for those of you who didn't know what UNK stands for - don't feel bad I had to look it up myself). Mason however, is no stranger, he did see some playing time in the Raiders preseason games. With Seymour another year older, and with the premium placed on pass rushing ends it would be a good "end product" for Oakland if Mason could find his way into rotation.
Hall Davis-Defensive End 6'5 270lbs. Originally drafted by, and played for the Rams during their 2010 season (preseason games only). Hall was then traded to the Redskins before being released, and picked up by the Titans; Davis was released by the Titans this September. I see Hall joining the Raiders as a sign that the team is looking to add depth, to a position that could never be too deep.
Jamie Cumbie-Defensive Tackle 6'7 290lbs. Defensive prospect who was signed by Oakland as an undrafted rookie free agent. Jamie spent the 2011 season with Oakland as a member of the practice squad; Having spent some time with the team it will be interesting to track his further development, and see if he's ready to take that next step of become a contributor on game day.
Carl Ihenacho-Linebacker/Defensive End 6'3 255lbs. Undrafted prospect who had a good college career playing for San Jose State. Furthermore, with the Raiders being unable to come to terms with Kamerion Wimbley, and their need for depth at the linebacker position the team has nothing to lose by seeing if Ihenacho can be a productive Raider.
Shawntae Spencer-Defensive Back 6'1 190lbs. Spent last season starting for the 49ers; However, this does help Oakland, because he's not a stranger to the Raiders newest defensive coordinator, Jason Tarver; Who spent most of his career working for San Francisco. Spencer isn't a spectacular corner however, he is a solid player; Moreover, he HAS to be an improvement over both former Raider defensive backs Chris Johnson, and Stanford Routt.
Ronald Bartell-Defensive Back 6'1 206lbs. Bartell is a former Ram; He suffered a neck injury and did not see much (if any) real action last season; Which I believe had something to do with him being released. However, Bartell should be fully recovered. Moreover, the same can be said for him as it was about Spencer; He has to be an improvement over former Raiders Chris Johnson, and Stanford Routt.
Rhett Bomar-Quarterback 6'2 225lbs. Spent his college career at the University of Oklahoma, and Sam Houston State before becoming a 5th round pick by the Giants in 2009. Bomar also spent time in Minnesota before joining Oakland. With Jason Campbell out of the picture, and Carson Palmer as the starter Bomar could be used to see how far along is the development of Terrelle Pryor; Let's hope that Pryor can impress, become the number two behind Carson, and that Bomar can be used as the third quarterback.
Zack Hurd-Offensive Line 6'7 320lbs. Signed to the Practice Squad. Zack played for Connecticut, where he had a good college career; He started 39 games and played in 52. Hurd did receive an invitation to the combine last year however, he (like many players do) did go undrafted. I do believe that Hurd does have talent. Furthermore, you can never have enough offensive linemen of quality, with potential for further growth.
Rashawn Jackson-Running Back 6'1 240lbs. Spent his college career at Virginia. He was signed as an undrafted free agent with the Panthers in 2010. With the Raiders having lost Rock Cartwright, and with the Mike Bush situation being what is it the team would only be smart by looking to bring in some more bodies to help with their running game.
Lonyae Miller- Running Back 6'0 232lbs. Spent his college career at Fresno State. He then went and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys; After a stint on the Dallas practice squad he was able to work his way on to the active roster, before now joining the Raiders. Previously I mentioned the loss of Rock Cartwright as well as Mike Bush; Now I'm going to talk a bit about Darren McFadden and how if he should go down the Raiders are going to be in need of someone that can be an every down back and come up with big plays; Which is exactly what Miller was for Fresno State.
Eddie McGee- Wide Receiver 6'4 210lbs. Spent his college career at Illinois. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by Oakland and spent the 2011 season on the practice squad. All indications are that he's a very athletic individual with good hands and speed. Imagine Raider Nation, we could have the 6'2 210lbs. speedy Darrius Heyward-Bey on one side of the field with the 6'4 210lbs. speedy McGee on the other; Carson Palmer couldn't have it any eaiser.
Just a few of the names that aren't "house-hold" now but, could very well be in the near future.
Raider From Birth.
