Oakland Raiders Sign WR Duke Calhoun

– Apr 20, 2012

Friday morning the Oakland Raiders announced the signing of wide receiver Duke Calhoun, formerly of the New York Giants. Calhoun recently tried out with the Raiders during veteran voluntary minicamp earlier in the week.

The former Memphis star receiver was undrafted, but captured the eyes his former Giants' coaches for the past two seasons in New York with his talent. Calhoun failed to make a roster spot on the team last season and was released due to a hamstring injury, eliminating his chances of making the final cut.

In 2010, Calhoun did in fact make nine game appearances, mostly on special teams and had one catch for four yards in New York.

At Memphis, he was an outstanding receiver and showed that he has the ability to thrive on the Raiders. For his college career, Calhoun caught 212 passes for 2,981 yards and 19 touchdowns in 41 games.

To make it on the Oakland roster he’s going to need to excel on special teams because the Raiders already have good depth at the wide receiver position with Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore and Louis Murphy.
