Carson Palmer & Darren McFadden: Best Duo In The AFC, Period!
Terrell White – Aug 11, 2012
Holla At Me Raider Nation!
First I want to apologize to you brothers & sisters.
Normally when I write my articles I make an effort to control my maniacal inner Raider. Hence my last article, in which instead of saying "Yo, the Raiders are going to win the Super Bowl!" I gave you a plethora of teams our beloved Raiders will have to contend with if their looking to return to being an elite team within the conference, (notice how I didn't even mention the words Super Bowl).
Hell, I'll even continue in that vein and say that if Oakland doesn't win the division, (which doesn't mean that they can't still win the Super Bowl, for those of you out there who just can't live without those two little words) I'm personally going to have a spot in my (silver & black) heart for Romeo Crennel.
While the Raiders have always been a forward thinking organization, (THANK YOU AL DAVIS!) the same can not be said for the league as a whole, (despite Roger Goodell using a female ref. but I digress). Therefore, I always have, and always will support, and promote having African American coaches, general managers, and ownership.
However, after having said all of that I must say this: I've had it up to my eye patch with the level of overall disrespect the media has shown to our Oakland Raiders!
For example: We all know that the NFL is a quarterback driven league. My question is why don't we hear more about the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, Carson Palmer?!? We all know that Carson is one of the best the NFL has to offer. Moreover, after spending last season with no training camp, no off season, and still damm near guiding the team to a division title big things should be expected.
However, do we hear or read about Carson? NO, we don't! These so called reporters can spend ALL DAY talking about Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, and the New York Jets situation! Speaking of New York, if they wanted to talk about a quarterback shouldn't it be Eli Manning?? (Sorry, I digress...again!)
Carson Palmer is a better quarterback then Tebow and Sanchez combined!!
Moreover, if the Jets had Carson Palmer playing quarterback for them instead of Mark Sanchez they never would have traded for Tim Tebow in the first place! One positive thing that will come out of this season is that Carson Palmer will take back his respect from these haters!!
Hell, he'd better because we're only going as far as Carson can take us. Now, don't be ridiculous and start thinking about Matt Leinart. Matt Leinart is here in Oakland because he worked with our new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in Houston. Carson knows Matt from college, and he knows that Matt Leinart is no threat to his starting job.
Matt Lineart is in Oakland to help Carson assimilate the offense just a bit easier, carry his helmet & shoulder pads to and from practice, and basically just be Carson's personal man servant. Lineart isn't the quarterback Carson Palmer is. Moreover, Matt Lineart will not be guiding this team to any significant wins. Sorry to disappoint you Matt Lineart fans out there.
The Dynamic Duo.
Every hero's best friend is the partner who watches his back, (Iron Man has Man of War / Captain America has Bucky / Bat-man has Robin, and so on - I think you get the point) The NFL is no different, every quarterbacks best friend is a strong running game.
Now if Carson Palmer is Bat-Man that means we need to find him a Robin. However, in this case I would have to say that Darren McFadden is more of a Night-Wing then a Robin, (consult D.C. Comics for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about).
All jokes aside Carson Palmer and Darren McFadden are no comic book characters! They're the most dangerous duo in the AFC!! Don't believe me? Or don't want to believe me? Well, lets take a quick look at some other combo's and you tell me who's better than the one in Oakland
Let's keep the criteria simple.
The only question you should as yourself is this: Would I trade Carson Palmer and Darren McFadden for the players that we're comparing them to?
I mentioned the Kansas City Chiefs earlier, so let's start there. While I don't have anything against Matt Cassel or Jamaal Charles I'm not trading Palmer for Cassel or McFadden for Charles. End of story.
Let's look at the fore mentioned New York Jets. As we already know Carson Palmer is a better quarterback than anyone the Jets have on their roster. Moreover, are you trading McFadden for a Shonn Greene or a Joe McKnight? I don't think so.
Let's look at some more realistic competition, the Baltimore Ravens. While I do respect Joe Flacco, and Ray Rice I'm not trading Carson, or McFadden for either. Flacco is a good quarterback however, at this moment in time the best person for the job in Oakland, is already in Oakland.
Having Flacco would eliminate the need for Leinart, (and Pryor for that matter) However, as I said, I want to win this season and Carson Palmer gives the Raiders their best chance of doing just that.
The same goes for Ray Rice. I think he's a great talent and I wouldn't mind having him on the team. However, the best running back for Oakland, is already in Oakland. Look for McFadden to have his name close to the top of leading rushers this season!!
The Ravens duo is more than likely the closest to the one that's in Oakland! This should be seen as a compliment because many people have the Ravens as one of their Super Sowl, (there go those two words again) teams.
How about the New England Patriots? While it's clear that Tom Brady has been a very productive quarterback and is going to the Hall Of Fame, I really don't like Tom Brady. However, I would have to at least consider trading him for Palmer; not saying that I'd make the trade but I'd think about it, (for a moment). The same can not be said for their running back situation. I'm not trading McFadden for Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley, and Danny Woodhead.
How about the Pittsburgh Steelers? Ben Roethlisberger is a good quarterback. Another person that we would have to consider, (just consider) trading Carson Palmer for. However, the running back situation in Pittsburgh is very similar to the one in New England. I'm not going to trade Darren McFadden for Isaac Redman or Rashard Mendenhall.
While there are other teams we could look at the Bills, Broncos, Chargers to name a few. The bottom line is that while Palmer and McFadden do have competition individually together they're not only the best in the west, their the best in the AFC!
