Oakland Raiders: Injury List Shrinking

John Doublin – Aug 20, 2013

As the 2013 NFL Preseason opened up, the Oakland Raiders suffered a lot of injuries to key players. Guys like Jacoby Ford, Miles Burris, and newly acquired defensive tackles Vance Walker and Pat Sims all went down with injuries of some kind. Most recently however, perhaps the best player on the team, left tackle Jared Veldheer, underwent surgery to repair a torn triceps muscle, and will likely miss significant time.

If you add first round pick, DJ Hayden to that list with his recent surgery to remove scar tissue that resulted after a life-threatening freak injury, the Raiders have been decimated by injury early in the 2013 campaign.

The lack of a pass rush in the first two preseason games, and Drew Brees' constant abuse, and utter embarrassment of new Raider, CB Tracey Porter, all the injuries were severely felt by the team, and fans alike.

There is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel though!

This week, the San Francisco Examiner, and NFL.com are reporting the Raiders will get several players back from the injury list this week.

It's being reported that DJ Hayden, Vance Walker, and Jacoby Ford are all cleared for full contact practice, and should all be available for this Friday's matchup versus the Chicago Bears.

In a recent article from the San Francisco Examiner, Ford sounds optimistic about his recovery and is looking forward to playing this Friday.

"First day back, it felt good to get back out there, I kind of took my time this time coming back. It didn't grab or anything so it definitely was a positive day for me. Before, it was kind of hard to accelerate and I was a little bit more timid, now I'm just 100 percent full go. I wanted to go do a little more (but) they kept holding me back. They definitely did a good job with that."

While this is all welcome news for Raiders fans, the one player Oakland needs most is likely out for at least six weeks. Although Jared Veldheer's surgery went well by all accounts, expect him to be placed on the "Injured Reserve-Designated to Return" list. This will sideline "The Hillsdale Hulk" until after week 6 at the very least.

Raider Nation Times will continue to monitor this and provide updates as they become available.
