How The Oakland Raiders Can Make The Playoffs

Raiders Head Coach Dennis Allen congratulates QB Terrelle Pryor after his record breaking 93 yard TD run, as the Raiders beat the Steelers 21-18.

– Oct 30, 2013

Don't look now, but the Oakland Raiders are 3-4, just one game behind the Jets (4-4) and Chargers (4-3) for the 6th seed in the AFC. They already hold a 1-0 tiebreaker over the Chargers and play the Jets soon, and if the Raiders want to make the playoffs, here are some things that need to happen:

QB Terrelle Pryor must continue improving his throwing mechanics. Growing pains were expected from the young QB from Ohio State, but what makes this kid even more interesting is the plays he can make with his feet. He set the record last week vs Pittsburgh for longest TD run by a QB in NFL history (93 Yards) and broke the record for longest run in Raiders history (92 Yards) that was set by RB Bo Jackson back in 1989. Let's be fair though, his throwing skills havn't been horrid and can easily improve greatly. He has 1,149 passing yards (32nd in NFL) and 391 rushing yards (14th in the NFL, 1st among other QB's) Along with 5 TD's and 7 INT's. The passing game needs to improve along with the turnover ratio. Gotta take care of the ball. But as long as we do this, let's take a look at the Raiders next 5 games: vs Eagles (3-5) @ Giants (2-6) @ Texans (2-5) vs Titans (3-5) @ Cowboys (4-4). All winnable games. If the Raiders run game can step up, you know, the actual RB's like uh, DARREN MCFADDEN. He did however step up Sunday vs the Steelers, he had 24 carries, 73 yards and 2 TD's. See what happens when DMC steps up? They win. Now if Pryor AND Run DMC can get going, and the defense keeps playing smash mouth hard nose football, they should have NO problem going 8-4 when we go to visit the Jets in week 14. And honestly, i think they can beat them. So 9-7, maybe even 10-6 is definitely possible, along with a possible playoff berth. But Pryor needs to take care of the ball, DMC needs to consistently contribute, and the Defense must keep playing at the hard nosed level they're playing at. NFL.Com has noticed, as they ranked the Raiders defense #5 overall. That's right Raider Nation, top 5. Great feeling isn't it? Do you believe the Raiders can make the playoffs? Let me know on Twitter and give me a follow @Austin_Martin23 and I hope this opened some more eyes, because if they take advantage and keep playing strong, we may witness our Oakland Raiders in the playoffs for the first time since 2002. A DECADE. Thanks for reading, and GO RAIDERS!
