Not too long ago Oakland was deemed the place where careers go to die. Whether you were a new draft pick or a veteran player it was likely you weren't going to play your best football in Oakland. Something about the environment there was toxic and players did everything they could to avoid it. Coaches advised players to avoid Oakland. Players advised players to avoid Oakland. Being a Raiders became just a place to go get your final paycheck.

The Oakland Raiders season has come to an end with their loss against the Texans this weekend. The 2016 Raiders have been the best Raiders team put together in over a decade. Their 12 wins were their highest total in 17 years and their playoff appearance was their first since 14 years ago. A lot of good happened this year but it was derailed when Derek Carr was injured in week 15. Now the Raiders head into the offseason looking to take the next step as a franchise and the decisions they make this summer could dicatate whether the Raiders are ready to become a real super bowl contender.

Reggie McKenzie has done a great job of turning the Raiders into a contender over the last couple of years. His first two draft picks of 2014 are a big reason for the Raiders turn around and have been the focal point of this season. Khalil Mack and Derek Carr are being talked about more than any other players on the Raiders team. Mack is in the Defensive Player of the Year conversations while Carr is being talked about as an MVP Candidate. However, this team goes beyond these two young superstars and the rest of the season will showcase that talent with Carr being out for the season.

Where were you when Connor Cook started his first NFL game? That's a question that we would all love to be asked 10 years down the road as Cook is in the twilight of his NFL career. Cook has an opportunity to write the first chapter of an amazing story this weekend against the Texans. He is the first quarterback in NFL history to make his first ever start during the playoff game. This weekend Cook has the opportunity to forever alter the future of the NFL.

The 2016 NFL season is over and the Raiders had one of their most successful seasons in a very long time. This season brought some memorable moments and some tough breaks as well. The Raiders ended up with a 12-4 record which was good enough for second in the AFC West and has them as the No. 5 seed heading into the playoffs. The "easiest" draw for a wild card match up was definitely the Texans, so the Raiders have an opportunity to extend their season this weekend.

'Twas the day after Christmas in the Raider Nation and we're full of disbelief and full of frustration. It's been over a decade since the team could go this far, but they'll have to do it without Derek Carr. On Christmas eve we tucked in our children all snug in their beds, with thought of Carr's injury running through our heads. Before this weekend we had thoughts of a 1st round bye, but now we're seeing a bunch of grown men cry.

The Raiders are coming off a dominating victory against their AFC West rivals and defending Super Bowl champs. At 7-2 you'd think they are playing their best football of the season, but the reality is they're not even close to their peak at this point in the season. They may be trending in the right direction, but there is still plenty of room for improvement for this Raiders team.
